About the School of Physician Assistant Studies
In August 2014, Marshall B. Ketchum University opened its doors as the first physician assistant program in Orange County, California. Our small class of 28 comes from all over—California, Arizona, Texas, Idaho, Utah, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Hawaii, and Colorado, as well as Nigeria, Ukraine, and Argentina. Many of us have worked as medical assistants, EMTs or scribes. Some have experience as a CNA, anesthesia assistant, in research, or as a paramedic. Overall, the class has worked in a variety of specialties, including: family medicine, internal medicine, emergency room/ICU, cardiology, surgery, geriatrics, pediatrics, dermatology, optometry, nutrition, oral surgery, orthopedics, and neurogenetics. Collectively, our class has over 150,000 hours of patient care experience, and averaged around 1,100 hours of volunteer/ community service hours at the time of application. Our class certainly is dedicated to becoming excellent health care providers centered in providing quality patient care.
As we strive to build a legacy for the PA program at MBKU, we have become involved in various ways with the community. One of our favorite community events thus far has been “Grace Miller Day”. At the end of our first quarter, students from Grace Miller Elementary School came to MBKU for a field trip. As PA students, we had the opportunity to teach them more about the human body at various stations throughout the day. The kids visited stations involving the heart, the lungs, the digestive system, the eyes, nutrition, and bones. This all-day event was a wonderful way for our class to get involved with the community and to provide exposure to both MBKU and to the PA profession. In addition to Grace Miller Day, our students were also involved in “Adventures in Science”, an event for local 4th and 5th graders to learn more about the health sciences and the human body. These events have provided a foundation for our program as we look for ways to interact with the community, specifically with schools in the Orange County area. With the increasing prevalence of diabetes in younger populations, our class aims to provide education to both children and families regarding its prevention, treatment, and the importance of implementing a healthy lifestyle. We hope that this involvement will lead to life- long changes that will increase the overall health of our Orange County community, as well as increase exposure to the physician assistant profession and our program here at MBKU.
